Latest “Billions” TV Show Episode Mentions Blockchain Technology Being Used for Mobile Voting

The blockchain technology is surely getting mainstream these days. While some years ago it would almost never be mentioned at all outside of crypto circles, now the media is talking about it all the time and even TV shows and movies are creating stories about it.

In the latest episode of Billions (Season 4, Episode 8: Fight Night), the blockchain technology is featured in the show and mentioned several times.

This is just the latest of several shows and movies which mentioned crypto. Some other recent ones were an easter egg about Bitcoin on Into The Spider-Verse, an episode of The Big Band Theory back in 2017, another in the fifth season of Silicon Valley last year and even before in Billions in May last year.

What Is Billions All About?

In case you are not familiar with the TV show, Billions is a drama show created by Brian Koppelman, Andrew Ross Sorkin and David Levien. It stars Paul Giamatti as Charles “Chuck” Rhoades, Damian Lewis as Robert “Bobby” Axelrod, Maggie Siff as Wendy Rhoades and Malin Åkerman as Lara Axelrod.

The series was started in 2016 and it is loosely based on the activities of the real-life U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara.

Basically, the series follows the U. S. Attorney Paul Giamatti as he deals with market manipulation and is involved in several legal battles.

Blockchain Technology Is Mentioned In Billions

In the latest episode of the show, the idea of using the blockchain technology for a voting system in which people will be able to vote using their phones comes up. Initially, the main character is against the idea, but he eventually has a change of heart when he discovers that another Attorney General, Jock Jeffcoat (Clancy Brown) is also against it.

Most of the discussion of the episode around the technology focused on the good and bad points of the technology. The antagonists are concerned that it may not be secure to use the blockchain for such an important process like voting, but the main character defends the technology affirming that it would help the voting system to be more inclusive.

According to him, using the system would allow more people to vote and this would be more within the lines of the “American ideal”. Because of this, they should be “real patriots” and approve the system as he proposes a pilot system to test the efficacy of the new voting system. He initially loses the battle but the pilot is approved before the end of the episode.

It is great to see the blockchain technology being featured in this kind of show, as it highlights how inclusive it is, however, the concerns about its security were not very accurate since the blockchain technology is, in fact, one of the most secure technologies that we have right now.
